Let's talk about contraception baby

Welllllllll we are back with a bang ,

so I've had a lot of young girls ask questions about sex, periods and all that goes in between and to be honest these girls are ranging between 12-18 , today society is scary as its all who did what and when and where .

I do not agree with any 12 year old having sexual intercourse of any kind , regardless of your age you should never be forced or have sex against your will and believe me half of your "friends " who say they have done it have NOT !!

Unfortunately we come from a day in age now were sex isn't a sacred union between husband and wife (depending on what you believe ) due to the Kylie Jenner's of the world over sexualising everything and let's be honest sex sells .

Our society today is a scary place now for young men and women growing up as its all a race to grow up , i remember being 12 and playing with barbie dolls not considering have sex with Johner from down the road .
Why we are in such a rush to become "adults " ill never understand or perhaps i am just getting old (sigh) hahahaha

I urge the young generation of today to trust their guts and not follow everyone else and if some one is pressuring you to do anything you do not feel comfortable doing weather that be sexual or not no that it is not okay and to speak out and get help with the situation .

Now any information i have in this blog is my own research and knowledge and i am just trying to answer some of the re occurring questions I am asked about protection and sex so I do not mean to offend anyone at all , but if i can help out just one person with any of this information then i am happy .

most young women who get in touch with me , don't understand about contraception and how it works so ill beak it down into some of the key stages :

1. The Pill

This would be the most common form amongst women , in was invented n the 1960's .
the pill will prevent you from getting pregnant in 95% of cases and it comes close to providing 99% protection if TAKEN correctly every single day .

the combined pill = contains Estrogen and Progestin hormones
the mini-pill=          Contains only Progestin with this form you need to take your pill a the same time everyday as you have a narrow window to miss it .

*The pill dose not protect you for an STI(sexually transmitted disease)*

2. The Patch

Same as the pill but in a patch form , you wear a patch for 3 weeks straight , take it of for 1 week allowing your menstrual cycle and then start on a brand new patch .
The patch is an interesting option as you don't need to think about it unlike a pill everyday , so it;s a wonder more women don't opt for this .

3 The Bar/Implant
This is a tiny rod about the size of a matchstick , it releases hormones into the body that prevent pregnancy .
A Doctor/Nurse insert the implant into your arm and you are protected for up to 4 years .

*The bar does not protect from an STI*

4. The Coil
It's a hormone releasing IUD(intrauterine contraceptive device) that is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for up to 5 years . The Mirena coil is recommended for woman who have had children plus it also helps with heavy periods .
It is a small "T" shaped device placed in the uterus , after it is inserted you are supposed to do a monthly check yourself this procedure is completely reversible , but some woman experience on going discomfort if it persists you need to see your doctor as perhaps this isn't the method for you .

5. Emergency Pill
This method is for a one off occasion and is not recommended for daily use it is particularly effective if the use of a condom broke or you have missed your pill . Ideally you are suppose to take it within 24 hours for a higher success rate as after 72 hours it drops to 50 % .
In Ireland you can now receive this in Pharmacies after a quick consult with a qualified Pharmacist and the prescribe you the right type they direct you how to take it , the reason they keep paper work is so one one may use and abuse this system the price varies from €30-€55 .
It's a very scary situation to be  in if you believe to be pregnant and are taking this pill , this is why if you are consenting to having sex this really shouldn't be an option as the other method's are there to be used first .

The different types of contraception are to cater for all us being different so you might have to trial a few and see what suits your lifestyle , I myself have been on the Yaz pill since I'm 14 years old that's not because i was sexually active ,I got my periods at the age of 11 and suffer immense pain with them so my Mother brought me to the doctor and this seemed to help , the pill can also help with acne along with other things it's such a misconception that if you hear of a teen on the pill its like OMG there having sex well that was not the case it is used for a lot more reasons and okay maybe parents have that extra security of knowing your safe .

Of course there are side effects and some Pills will affect you in worse ways than others so you might have to try out a few different types until you find you match :

* Mood swing ( all us women are guilty LOL)
* Sore breasts ( this can occur from periods as well and the pill cant stop that )
*Headaches ( these can be persistent at the start but should fade away )
*Nausea ( you may fell sick for the fist two weeks till your body adjusts )
*Weight ( this is the one that gets a lot of woman you weight can fluctuate up to 1 stone until the pill settles in your system  )
*stomach pain ( again should ease after two weeks )
Most side affects should disappear after 2 months if the persist or become more server such as
*Vomiting
*Rash
*Migraines
You need to stop taking you pill and see your doctor .

In Ireland you must be 16 or older to go speak to your doctor alone about contraception , younger than that you must be accompanied by an adult , your doctor will examine your blood pressure and check your weight while prescribing you a pill , normally it is a repeat proscription of 3 -6 months so you have to visit  your doctor at least twice a year to be monitored .

The more careful and consistent you re with your contraception the higher the effectiveness .

Scarily the FIRST time is happening earlier and earlier now days ,
Study shows that since 2012 most people have had there first time before the age of 17 , in that percentage 76% of teenage mothers gave birth between the ages 17-19  , 48 were 15 and younger .
That to me is just shocking and don't get me wrong people can be in lone and like everyone else think "It will never happen to me " but if you are taken on the responsibility of sex no matter what your age then know a BABY is the out come and right now were debating the whole abortion law which is another days work ,

But to the young girls out there who are thinking of doing anything sexual ask yourself "Am I ready " " do I feel safe " and most importantly " What are my reasons for doing it " and if your answering it for all the right ones then maybe you are old enough or mature enough to be considering having sex but don't do it ti impress your friends because it will back fire on you and your first time isn't like the movies make it out to be , It's awkward and uncomfortable and you don't know how to feel after it , so i can say firmly that any 12 year old who is being asked to have sex just DON'T  your time will come .

The first time you always remember least make it for the right reasons .
